Progressing

What to expect on progressing up the levels of Flyball and what may come next for you.

This is a skills progression diagram, it isn’t a class outline. That is, the training of each dog goes at the speed at which the dog learns and we often go from beginner tasks, up to advanced tasks then back to beginner tasks. At the end of the day, we want our dogs to have fun!

On your marks...

The ideal time to begin training for flyball is when your dog has a reliable recall, ensuring they can return to you effectively. It doesn't have to be perfect but we do often train in a wide area that wouldn't be fun to chase a dog over!

Stage 1

Restrained Recall - A person will hold the dog and the handler calls the dog from the other end of the lane. This is helping them get used to moving back and forth along the lanes.

Stage 2

Recall with hurdles:

Still with a person on each end, but we slowly add a low jump for them to go over. We are aiming for all four!

Stage 3

Fetch with Recall - A person across from the handler holds a tennis ball and the handler releases the dog to retrieve. Once the dog returns with the ball, a tug rope or favourite toy is provided to have the dog drop the ball and come to handler.
